Before You Book
What Makes Sail Maui Different From Other Maui Tour Companies?
We actually sail. Most tour boats in Maui motor to their destinations and never hoist their sails. When the winds are up, we love to shut off the engines and let the trade winds do the work. This means less noise, more nature, and the sound of the ocean. We also keep our groups small, typically 25 – 49 guests, so you get real attention from our crew and space to enjoy the experience.
How Many People Are on a Sail Maui Tour?
Our tours are intentionally small, usually 25 – 49 guests depending on the vessel. This is significantly smaller than many Maui tour operators and makes a real difference in the quality of your experience.
Is Sail Maui Good for First-time Snorkelers or Non-swimmers?
Absolutely! Our crew is experienced at helping guests who are new to snorkeling or uncomfortable in the water. We fit you for gear, provide instruction, and our life guard certified crew stays in the water with you. Our small group size means you’re never lost in a crowd. Our crew knows who needs extra attention and provides it.
What's the Difference Between the Molokini and Lāna'i Snorkel Tours?
Molokini is a crescent-shaped volcanic crater and protected marine preserve about three miles off the coast the water is exceptionally clear and the marine life is abundant. This charter departs from Ma’alaea Harbor, Maui’s central harbor, every morning at 7:30 am. The Lāna’i Coast tour departs from Lahaina Harbor to the neighboring island of Lāna’i, with a greater chance to see native wildlife such as spinner dolphins and sea turtles. Both are outstanding charters with fantastic sailing, and great for first-timers.
Is Sail Maui Good for Families With Kids?
Yes! All of our tours are open to all ages. We are a family forward business. Kids tend to love the sailing, the snorkeling, and spotting sea turtles and dolphins. Our small group environment means the crew can give kids personal attention, and the catamaran’s wide deck and trampolines up front are a hit with younger guests.
What Is the Best Time of Year to See Humpback Whales in Maui?
Humpback whales migrate to Maui’s waters each winter, typically arriving in December and departing by late March or early April. Peak season is January through February when sightings are most frequent. Sail Maui runs dedicated whale watching tours from December 15 through March 31.
Do You Guarantee Whale Sightings?
We can’t guarantee wildlife sightings since whales are wild animals, but our sighting rate during whale season is extremely high. Our captains have years of experience reading the water and know exactly where to look. If you sail with us in season, you will almost certainly see whales.
What to Expect on Board
Do You Have Snorkel Gear on Board?
Yes. We provide snorkel gear and will fit you for the correct size. If you prefer to bring your own gear you’re welcome to!
Will We See Dolphins?
We hope so! Both bottlenose and spinner dolphins are native to our waters. We frequently see dolphins, especially on our Lāna’i trip. However, dolphins are wild animals and while we’ll always do our best, we can never guarantee sightings.
Do Our Vessels Really Sail?
Absolutely. Authentic sailing is what we’re all about and it’s what sets us apart. If we have wind (and usually we do) we will be sailing.
Will the Boat Visit More Than One Snorkel Site?
Our catamarans typically go to one snorkel site per trip, though if the conditions are right and we have the time we will make a second stop. We specialize in performance sailing, so rather than motoring around to multiple spots we focus on one great location and then enjoy an exhilarating sail.
Can You Accommodate Special Diets?
We can provide vegan wraps upon request. Our caterers operate in nut-free facilities, and our crew have ingredient lists on board. If you have severe allergies we encourage you to bring your own food items on board to stay safe and comfortable.
Should We Bring Our Own Towels?
Please do. Sail Maui does not provide towels, though we keep a small inventory on board available for purchase.
What Should We Bring?
A hat, sunglasses, camera, and reusable water bottle are at the top of our list. If you’re joining us on a sunset sail, especially during winter months, a light jacket or sweater is recommended.
Do You Provide Sunscreen?
Yes, we provide reef-safe sunscreen as a courtesy on all our boats. We strongly recommend using reef-safe sunscreen as chemicals in conventional brands can harm coral and promote bleaching.
Why Can't We Use Spray-on Sunscreen?
Spray-on sunscreen tends to coat the deck, which creates a slip hazard. It’s also highly toxic to the marine environment, which we care deeply about protecting.
Why Are Full-face Masks Not Permitted on Snorkel Excursions?
Three reasons: you can’t communicate with our crew while wearing one, they frequently leak or fog up, and full-face masks have been known to restrict breathing.
Can I Purchase Sail Maui Merchandise on Board?
Yes, we carry UPF 50+ performance crew shirts, tees, tank tops, sweatshirts, hats, and towels. If we don’t have your size on board you can order online.
Good to Know
Does Sail Maui Ever Cancel Trips?
Occasionally, yes, most often due to weather, but sometimes due to maintenance or minimum passenger counts not being met. If we need to cancel we’ll be in touch as soon as possible and will either accommodate you on another trip or provide compensation. Guests who booked through a concierge or agent should contact them directly.
Where Do Tours Depart From?
We depart from two locations: Lāhainā Harbor and Mā’alaea Harbor (Slip #72). The departure point varies by tour — check your specific tour page or confirmation for details.
